What is the Science of Reading?

What the Experts are Saying

“There is no comprehension strategy powerful enough to compensate for the fact that you can’t read the words.”

~ Dr. Anita Archer

“The most common source of reading difficulties is poor phonemic awareness.”

~Dr. David Kilpatrick

““If a child memorizes ten words, the child can read only ten words, but if a child learns the sounds of ten letters, the child will be able to read 350 three sound words, 4320 four sound words and 21,650 five sound words.”

~Dr. Martin Kozloff

“The body of work referred to as the “science of reading” is not an ideology, a philosophy, a political agenda, a one-size-fits-all approach, a program of instruction, not a specific component of instruction. It is the emerging consensus from many related disciplines, based on literally thousands of studies, supported by hundreds of millions research dollars, conducted across the world in many languages.”

~Dr. Louisa Moats

My Favorite Reading Interventions

  • My favorite program! Systematic, clear, and has numerous resources to keep students engaged. This is the approach I use the most in my tutoring

  • Although UFLI already includes so many of the effective elements of Orton Gillingham, I like to include certain parts of the OG lesson into or in addition to my UFLI lessons

  • While the above programs focus heavily on phonics, Heggerty’s program focuses on Phonemic Awareness, an essential foundation for students to master to give them a better advantage when it is time to move into phonics.

In my tutoring sessions, I will first conduct a Core Phonics Assessment which will let me know the gaps in your child’s phonics skills and/or phonemic awareness. Going from there, this will determine my approach. UFLI incorporates multiple reading components seamlessly, so I will always use UFLI as my foundation, but I will also include elements of instruction with Orton Gillingham and Heggerty as needed on a case-by-case basis.
